Montana is home to an impressive amount of wildlife. From the deck of the Eagles’ Nest Bed and Breakfast, you can see plentiful whitetail deer, eagles, osprey, and wild turkeys. The river is a key gathering point, and otters, geese, beaver and kingfishers are always plentiful. More shy but still present are elk, black bear, mountain lion, grizzly (brown bear) and moose. The vast wilderness in the Yaak and Kootenai National Forest provide plentiful wildlife viewing opportunities.

NOT JUST FOR YELLOWSTONE ANYMORE.
Efforts have been underway in Yellowstone National Park to replenish the wolf populations.
Similar efforts have been undertaken successfully here in Northwest Montana and are proving
successful here as well. Montana is home to both species of wolves – Timber and Gray wolves.
It’s not unusual to be able to hear the occasional wolf song while on a remote hike. The owners of the Eagles’ Nest lodge are happy to pinpoint some hikes with wildlife possibilities.
HERE, KITTY KITTY!
Mountain lions are some of the most beautiful creatures here in Northwest Montana. They are
shy and elusive, but they are definitely around our neck of the woods. It is not uncommon to see
lion tracks or scat on hikes here, so keep your eyes peeled and you may get lucky enough to
meet the gaze of the apex predator of North America, before it vanishes soundlessly back into
the forest to find a nice deer for dinner.

JUST THE BEAR NECESSITIES OF LIFE!
Black Bear are plentiful in our neck of the woods, and grizzlies while more rare, are still common in this area of Northwest Montana. Both are shy creatures and interactions are rare, but
spotting a bear is not a rare thing around here. The Yaak National forest has a successful program to replenish the brown bear population, and in recent years sightings have increased. We are always in awe when we see one of these intelligent and gorgeous bruins wandering across our paths.
HEY UP THERE!
Native to the high peaks and craggy cliffs common in our mountainous terrain. Keep your neck craned and eyes peeled and you might just find a shaggy friend looking back down at you!

BAAA-ACK UP AND BE RESPECTFUL.
These hefty fellas are nothing to mess with. Pause on your drive following the Kootenai River- between Libby and Troy, there are some areas across the river that have a large big horn sheep population enjoying the lush riverside grass ( and in some case lawns!) along the water’s edge. Your hosts can advise a few roads to drive down where you can get an up close view as these big grazers wander and feed.

THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!
Northwest Montana is chock full of deer, both whitetail and mule deer are plentiful here. Morning and evening (and usually afternoon) involve deer wandering all over the land here at the Eagles’ Nest lodge. Spring finds us meeting the new fawns and watching their wobbly progress as they explore the world. In the summer, if you pull back the curtains in your room you are quite likely to surprise a four-legged friend with a mouthful of the owners’ beautiful rose bushes. Whether watching or hunting, the owners are happy to connect you with local hunting guides, or good hikes for critter watching and photography.
BIGGER THAN LIFE!
Moose can be seen in Northwest Montana quite frequently and elk are even more common. The racks of antlers of these animals is awe inspiring, and they know how to use them, so observe
from a distance. Their tracks are common in the hills and paths near the Eagles’ Nest, and we’ve seen moose standing unconcernedly in the Kootenai River as we pass by more than once. Come see these massive ruminants in their mountain home!
