Huckleberries:  The Hunt for Purple Gold

Upon arrival at our peaceful bed and breakfast in Troy, Montana...grab your buckets and head for the hills!

What's the big deal about huckleberries?

Sweeter than a blueberry and more tart than a blackberry... worth wrestling a grizzly for!

So what are huckleberries, and why are they made so well-known in Bozeman, Montana, and across the state? If this is your first visit to the mountains of Northwest Montana, you make be unfamiliar with these addictive little purple nuggets of deliciousness. At first glance these look like small blueberries, but that's where the similarities end. Every July, the Troy, Montana locals (most of the people and all of the bears) head for the hills above 3,000 feet to hunt the green hillsides for purple gold.

Huckleberries only grow wild, and they only grow high on the hillsides above 3,000 feet. Therefore, if you buy these little beauties from pickers, expect to pay a sweet penny. There is a reason they are called "purple gold." But if you are willing to hike some gorgeous scenery near our luxury bed and breakfast just outside of Glacier National Park, there is no reason you can't come home with a bucketful!

Huckleberry Cheesecake - an Eagles' Nest specialty item.

Come stay with us at our riverfront bed and breakfast here in Troy, Montana, and you might just get a slice of your own to enjoy as you watch the eagles fish the river....

When hunting for huckleberrries, it is important to remember that in remote Northwest  Montana - you are not alone in the woods. Always make plenty of noise so that the berry-focused bruins know where you are. They will naturally wander off to other more private berry patches.

The local Forest Service office in nearby Libby is a great place to stop in for the latest in news - they also have large paper fold out maps of the Kootenai National Forest with all the topography and service roads listed - a great resource!

When hiking in the Kootenai National Forest or any of the other nearby wilderness areas, be sure to let folks know when and where you are going - and when to return. This is basic hiking safety and is just an all-around good practice in case of an emergency.

It's a great place to hike even if your don't come home with berries - take your camera and look for some of our amazing wildlife, or splash through a pristine mountain stream and have a picnic in a meadow. Remember to 'leave no trace' and pack out any refuse.

Relax - Unwind - Recharge

The Eagles' Nest Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by about 2 million acres of national forest and is driving distance to Glacier National Park. We are 30 miles south of the Canadian border, so if your trip takes you up into the beautiful Canadian Rockies, we are a great spot to stay over on that leg of the journey. Fly fishing enthusiast? No problem! Grab your rod and head down to the river or book a once-in-a-lifetime float trip with a professional guide.
