FLY FISHING

as addicting as golf, but even more fun at our riverfront bed and breakfast in Troy, Montana.

the experience of a lifetime

what you need to know...

The Kootenai River offers world-class trout fishing for anglers from all over the world. Less crowded than some other more touristy areas, the miles of the unspoiled river offer limitless areas to choose from. Whether wade fishing, casting from the bank, or employing a guide for a customized float trip, your hosts at the private Eagles' Nest Bed and Breakfast are ready to offer advice and local contacts for you to make your dream a reality in Troy, Montana.

One of the best ways to fish the Kootenai River is to get a guide for a half or full day trip and use their knowledge and guidance to ensure a great experience. We can connect you with local guide services - though in the peak of the season, we strongly recommend you arrange this in advance of your arrival, especially if you intend to visit the nearby Glacier National Park. We weren't kidding when we said this is a world-renowned fly-fishing location - the local guides tend to book up in peak season.

The moods of the river....

The river changes with the seasons

While the Kootenai River is regulated by a local dam, the moods of the river are as changeable as the weather. Spring melt and summer temperatures change the level, clarity, and colors of the water - which affects where and how the fish are active. Hatches of seasonal insects also change how and when the way the fish seek their dinner. All affect the way that you might choose to fish the local waters.

There are several pictures here of the same curve in the Kootenai - it is the view upriver from the bed and breakfast. Take a careful look and notice the changes in water level from early spring (right) to mid-summer (immediately above) to winter (see collage above). Wow!

Be sure to get your fishing license. You can buy them online or in the local sporting goods store in Libby. These local resources can also help you kit up for a day of angling with reasonable prices.

A local guide might seem extravagant - but generally they are quite reasonable for what you get. Most offer a full or half day with snack/lunch. Best of all they can get to river areas that are unreachable on foot or via wading. If you are a serious angler, it's well worth the money. We are happy to connect you with local resources near our exclusive bed and breakfast in Troy,Montana that can offer such expertise!

The Kootenai River is not the only place local spot to fish. There is an abundance of large and small lakes in the area - both isolated and popular; not to mention innumerable streams that offer amazing remote wading opportunities.

What should I fish for?

Our lakes and streams just outside our peaceful bed and breakfast in Troy, Montana offer a variety of trout: Rainbows, Bulls, Brookies and Browns all inhabit our local waters, and some of them get really, really big. See our link below for a story on a 32-pounder. Yes. Thirty-two-pounds! Bring a big net.

Our likes offer pike, trout, salmon, bluegill, bass, and everything in between. Lake fishing using the standard rod and reel is an option or get technical and learn the subtle art and language of fly fishing - delicately presenting a lure and convincing that savvy, eagle-wary trout that the lure is really a delicious fly. It's an art form, and we offer easy and highly technical waters depending on the water source and time of year.

And if you are just a truly unskilled angler, see us when the salmon are at the end of their spawning journey. Yes - all the way from the Pacific Ocean. There are a few locations where anglers are allowed to snag them from the river using special hooks. The fish are bright red and you literally just pull them right out of the water. (And onto the grill, with a little olive oil, salt and pepper.) These guys are at the end of their lifespan and there is nothing quite as good as fresh grilled salmon.

Luxury Fishing Vacations

We would be pleased to help you put together that luxury fishing vacation. We can connect you to local guides and outfitters who excel at custom making your fly-fishing experience.

And lastly...

Respect the Water

Like many things near our luxury bed and breakfast Troy, Montana, beauty is tempered with the need for respect. The Kootenai River is fast and cold - and should be approached with respect and caution. When enjoying local watersports, we sure to use the right safety gear and precautions. Do not dive or jump into unknown or untested waters. The current can be unforgiving. The beauty of the area has long captured our hearts, but our admiration is always tinged with a healthy respect for our surroundings.
